when in doubt, use fresh eyes.
Six years ago my brother-in-law brought his drone to our house to take residential aerial photos and video. It was my first time seeing a drone up close and the technology was awe inspiring, yet terrifying. There was something about the movement and look of a drone that felt out of this world and straight out of a Sci-Fi movie.
Once the drone was in flight, I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing the place we call home from a bird’s eye view for the first time. We had been living in the house my husband built for three years and it was always a work in progress — we were the quintessential “weekend warriors” as we both had full time jobs and a young family to raise.
Quite literally, we carved our property out of the mountain, carefully placing boulders for retaining walls, strategically choosing which trees were to stay and which would be turned into firewood. Each part of our residence from the walls of the house, to the slope of the yard, and the curve of the driveway was meticulously thought out. Despite all of the careful planning it took to map out our future home, we never realized how beneficial an aerial perspective of our virgin property could have been for this process.
For close to a hundred years our property was respectfully stewarded by my Step Father, Everett F. Wright, and his family as a cattle farm with antique apple & peach orchards, wrapped with primitive stone walls that were built by settlers and farmers over many centuries. Our lot of land was rugged and rocky, we had a lot of work to do to make it our own. Over time, we discovered drainage that could have been more efficient, trees that blocked desirable vantage points, and features of the land that looked to bring more inconvenience than enjoyment. What a difference aerial imagery would have made in the planning and development stages.
There’s a phrase that goes something like…
“When in doubt it’s always better to look at the problem with a fresh set of eyes”.
I learned the day I saw aerial photos of my property I may have been looking at it for the millionth time but in truth for the first time with “fresh eyes”. That bird’s eye view changed the way I saw my land, my neighborhood, and my home forever. Since then I have been enamored by aerial imagery and fascinated how a landscape can be presented in it’s brand new, unique glory with a set of “fresh eyes.” It has become my passion to share this gift of new sight with others and this is how MediaBird Studios came to be. Every time I take an aerial image with my Mavic Air 2 to share with a homeowner, business, or neighbor I get that same “fresh eyes” thrill and I’m grateful to be able to share that with the world! Contact me to see if I can do the same for you :) Thanks for reading!
